As a first time buyer, this was one question that I had to get a better understanding of before I made my purchase. Knowing the differences between what each movement made me feel more intelligent of what I was purchasing. I thought it would be good to begin to explain to you what the key differences were for each type of watch.

Quartz Replica Watches operate by using a tiny quartz tuning fork with gold tipped ends. The battery in the watch sends the fork a signal, which sends a vibration to the rest of the circuit board to keep the perfect time. Quartz watches can last 10 years plus, but due to the gold erosion on the fork tips this can become inaccurate over time.

Automatic Replica Watch is also known as an auto winding watch, which winds itself based on movement. If you were to take the back side off the watch and look at how it works, you will see there is a rotating piece of metal called a pendulum that moves every time the watch does. this in turn winds the main spring. If you do not wear this watch on a daily basis, it will not wind and you will have to reset it.

Now that you have that information, here are a few questions to consider before you choose what to purchase.

Am I Really Getting a Swiss Movement?

With over tens of thousands of replica watch websites creeping up on the world wide web, we see an endless supply of sellers offering “Swiss Valjoux 7750″ movements in their watches for a full range of prices. Customers often ask me if the watches featured on a certain website have “Real Swiss 7750″ movements”. To this question I answer that only about 5% of them are available with Swiss 7750 movements, the other 95% are using Asian clone 7750 movements. Many websites claim that all of their chronograph watches feature real Swiss made 7750 movements, and justify the higher prices they charge with this claim. Any replica watch site offering Swiss 7750 movements are plain out lying and cheating you.

Here are three simple reasons why most replica watches DON’T use Swiss 7750 movements:

1. The Swiss Valjoux 7750 doesn’t simply “bolt” right in to most replica watches.

When watches are produced at factories here, they are designed to accept Asian Valjoux clone movements. The Swiss Valjoux 7750 is similar, but not the SAME as the Asian Valjoux 7750 automatic movement . Therefor, when watches come out of assembly designed to accept Asian Valjoux 7750 movements, they must be MODIFIED to use a Swiss 7750 Valjoux movement. Modifications can include the canon pins, hands, dial, date wheel, crown stem etc. The parts from an Asian Valjoux clone watch usually do not fit a Swiss 7750 Valjoux movement. Due to the modification necessary to use a Swiss Valjoux movement, most of these watches ship, and remain with Asian Valjoux 7750 installed.

2. The Swiss Valjoux 7750 movement is not cheap.

An unmodified Swiss Valjoux 7750 movement can cost upwards of $500 USD. On ebay, the lowest price you can expect to pay for a new, completely unmodified Swiss Valjoux 7750 movement is $300 USD. The price is for an UNMODIFIED movement. That means it doesn’t come with the proper crown, proper date wheel, the crown stem needs to be modified, and depending on the watch being used, some of the functions must also be modified before it can be installed into the replica. If you see “Swiss Valjoux” watches selling for $349 – $400, common sense should tell you that something may be wrong with this scenario.

3. The Asian 7750 movement is readily available, the Swiss 7750 is not.

Swiss Valjoux 7750 movements are not always readily available. They must be obtained from importers and distributors. Sometimes they are in stock, sometimes they are not in stock. Importers and distributors control the availability, and thus they control the price of the Swiss Valjoux movement. The cost changes depending on availability and import circumstances. The Asian Valjoux movement is made here in China. It’s always available, it’s always in stock, and if it ever goes out of stock, more can be made here locally instead of importing them. For a business, this is much more logical the depending on imported materials or mechanisms. If 100% of the parts are made in the same city, supply will be predictable.

So then, why do so many sites advertise “Swiss 7750 movements”? They can’t all be lying right?

1. They think their customers are stupid, and cannot tell the difference between Swiss 7750 movements and Asian 7750 movements.
2. They tell their customers that Asian 7750 movements are garbage, and will die after a few weeks (not true at all these days), and that customers should spend the extra few hundred dollars on a Swiss 7750 that will last forever. The customer believes the seller.
3. They then ship the customer an Asian 7750, which the customer accepts, because most customers are not watch makers, or watch experts and cannot tell that they have been charged a much higher price, and shipped the same standard Asian 7750 clone that came with the watch to begin with.

So how can I tell if the watch I bought, which was advertised as a “Swiss Valjoux 7750″ movement, actually contains the movement that I paid for?

Check out photos below showing the difference. If you paid for a Swiss 7750 movement, and what you received differs from the pictures below, then you have probably just fallen for a common scam and overpaid greatly for an Asian 7750 clone.

Differences:

1. The engravings on the Swiss Valjoux 7750 movement illustrated below. As of yet, these engravings are not found on the Asian movement, but there is a strong chance the producers of Asian movements may start putting these on their movements in the future.

2. The date window on the Swiss Valjoux 7750/7753 watch should be FLUSH with the dial in most cases. In the picture below you can see a custom made replica Panerai PAM250 Daylight that I assembled for a customer using a real Swiss made Valjoux 7750 movement. The date wheel is flush with the dial. There is no gap or space between the dial and date wheel. With Asian Valjoux movements, it is currently impossible to make a Panerai replica with flush date wheel. The Asian 7750 movement causes the date wheel to be recessed from the dial, or “sunken” in.
You can clearly see a space between dial and date wheel on most Panerai Asian 7750 models. That being said, some watches from other brands, like Hublot or IWC DO NOT have recessed date wheels when using Asian 7750 movements. So this advise applies mostly for PANERAI and BREITLING replica watches, not other brands.

3. The movements themselves are not identical. The easiest way to check if you were scammed is to open the caseback of your watch and simply look at the movement. The model on the left is a PAM163 40mm with a modern Asian 7750 clone movement installed. The watch on the right is a replica PAM250 that I custom made for a customer, using a real Swiss 7753 Valjoux movement. Note the clear differences including but not limited to the color of the screws.
–The movements regulators have a different design. You can see the Asian regulator (left) has two pins holding the upper end of the regulator in place, while the Swiss valjoux 7750 (right) has just one pin. This is the best way to spot an Asian 7750.
–On these particular models, the rotor bearing assembly is completely different. You can see that the Asian 7750 (left) has seven ball bearings but the Swiss Valjoux movement (right) has five bearings. Also note the blue screw on the Asian movement. *****It should be noted that the latest generation of Asian 7750 movements (used in many Hublot, IWC, Chopard and Tag Heuer replicas) also have 5 bearings, just like the Swiss Valjoux movement, so this advice applies to only older Asian 7750 movements.

5. Last but not least, another obvious tell. The ETA logo engraving featured under the balance spring assembly WILL NOT be found on an Asian 7750 Clone movement. Look for this logo engraved under the balance spring assembly. If it isn’t there, you have probably just greatly overpaid for a watch with an Asian Valjoux clone movement.

When ordering or shopping for a replica watch, it’s best to keep in mind the above mentioned facts. Many sellers do not mind lying to customers to extract extra profits, and when you confront them about sending you the wrong movement, they will probably not answer your emails. As a rule, you should assume that every 7750 replica watch you order will be coming with an Asian 7750 movement, and there is no point in paying extra for a so-called “Swiss 7750″ movement unless you personally know the seller, and you have personally seen with your own two eyes a watch custom made by them with a Swiss Valjoux movement installed.
Customers ask us about this frequently. “Why do your watches use Asian 7750 movements, but other sellers are using Swiss 7750 movements?” The answer is explained above. The truth is that almost NO ONE uses Swiss 7750 movements. The bracelet's most attractive feature is its reversed struc-ture, with a flat inner surface and the link hinges on top. In the sumptuous living room, which doubles as a screening room, of his historic home in the upscale Hollywood Hills enclave of Benedict Canyon, Brett Ratner is putting the finishing touches on his latest project, one near and dear to his heart. With the meticulous, critical eye of a seasoned Hollywood director and producer, he scrutinizes the latest draft submitted for his approval, nods his head in appreciation, and then stops to ask for a final change.
"Do you see here where it's black on the outside of the case and also black inside, on the dial?" he says, pointing to a vintage watch and holding it up next to the new prototype on his wrist. "That's what I was going for... more black instead of the gray."
"It's gray because you're looking through the 'lens,'" responds one of Ratner's guests, referring to the shaded, circular area in the center of the prototype's sapphire crystal. "The 'lens' is gray; the calendar is white. It has to be white to be legible. See, when you move the hand, it's white. You're just seeing the visible parts." This observation comes from Leonid Khankin, managing director of Ernst Benz, producer of aviator inspired mechanical Swiss watches. He is the man primarily responsible for translating Ratner's vision into concrete reality.

Ratner strokes his famously stubbled chin and stares intently at the watch, with its black PVD-coated case and vintage-style nylon strap. "I'm happy with it; I just thought you could do black on black."

"The gray gives it contrast, though. It looks nice," another guest chimes in. This is Matthew Bain, watch expert, founder of the Senzatempo vintage-watch store in Miami Beach, and Ratner's timepiece guru the man most responsible for the 40-year-old director's accumulation of a watch collection that would be the envy of many older connoisseurs.
The project at the center of this discussion, as should be evident by now, is not one of Ratner's films, not the latest addition to an impressive resume that includes the Rush Hour trilogy, Red Dragon, Family Man, X-Men: The Last Stand and the upcoming biopic of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. It is Ernst Benz's Brett Ratner Limited Edition Chrono-scope the project that has enabled Ratner, for the first time, to project his now well-honed watch collector sensibilities onto a limited-edition timepiece that will bear his own name. And if the detailed discussion between him, Khankin and Bain is any indication, getting it just right is as important to Ratner as the final cut of his next box-office blockbuster.
The watch itself came about through Ratner's involvement in Chrysalis, a charitable organization that helps place poor and homeless people into jobs. Chrysalis had contacted Khankin about creating four celebrity-branded timepieces, a portion of whose proceeds would go toward the organization's cause. Actor Eric Dane, singer Mary J. Blige and music mogul Russell Simmons also contributed their names to watches in the "Time for Change" collection, but while each of those stars offered input, Ratner was the only one who took a personal hand in the concept and design of his watch. As an introduction to the unveiling of his collection, he is showing me and the impromptu entourage that has gathered here for his interview and photo shoot the vintage watches J that inspired different aspects of that watch's design: its 47-mm size is taken from a Panerai, its military-style canvas strap from a Breitling, its tri-compax subdial design from a Heuer. "In film school I used this old, German camera with a three-lens turret in front, and the lenses were in this formation," Ratner recalls, pointing at the subdials of the 1960s-vintage Heuer. "I'm also a fan of this military-style strap, like the ones made for NATO in the 1940s and 1950s." Bain points out that this particular Heuer was, indeed, made for the German military.
What makes the Ratner Chrono-scope distinctive is its partly skeletonized dial, designed to evoke both the viewfinder of a director's camera and the shutter and lens of an old-fashioned photographer's camera. The Valjoux movement is partially visible through the translucent crystal (the "gray" area that sparked the previous discussion). The black matte finish on the case is evocative of old-school military watches. When the watch finally becomes a finished project, meeting the approval of both Ratner and Khankin, it will be manufactured in a series of only 24 pieces, making it an instant collectible, and thus a worthy addition to the cache of horological treasures that Ratner has, quite carefully and specifically, assembled over the course of his career.
WHILE BRETT RATNER'S love of watches developed over time, his love of filmmaking emerged almost from day one. Born and raised in Miami Beach, he made regular pilgrimages to the matinees mostly action movies with his Cuban grandfather. "As a Cuban, his English wasn't perfect," Ratner recalls, "so it was easier for him to understand what was going on in those types of films." He knew around age eight that he wanted to make movies, and in 1983, he got his first taste of a Hollywood career snagging an uncredited cameo in the Al Pacino classic Scarface while hanging around the set. He enrolled at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts at 16, becoming the youngest film major in the department, and attended NYU Film School. His first big break came when he screened his award-winning short-film project, Whatever Happened to Mason Reese, for his now fellow Chrysalis sup-porter and big-time watch freak, Russell Simmons.
Simmons hired Ratner to direct music videos, launching the young filmmaker's highly successful career in that field, wherein he collaborated with a range of artists that included Madonna (Ratner won an MTV Video Music Award for "Beautiful Stranger"), Mariah Carey, Jay-Z and Wu-Tang Clan, In 1997, he graduated to his first feature-length film, Money Talks, a sleeper hit starring Charlie Sheen and a then-little-known comedian named Chris Tucker. A year later, Ratner struck box-office gold with Rush Hour, which teamed Tucker with Hong Kong martial-arts-film icon Jackie Chan. The culture-clash buddy comedy grossed $250 million worldwide and spawned two blockbuster sequels. Having put his stamp on the action genre, Ratner branched out into romantic comedy (with 2000's The Family Man), suspense thriller (2002's Red Dragon, a Silence of the Lambs prequel) and crime caper (2004's After the Sunset) before tackling his biggest budget and most ambitious project, X-Men: The Last Stand, the third film in the mega-popular Marvel Comics mutant superhero franchise, which in 2006 shattered the record for the biggest Memorial Day weekend release ever, taking in $123 million in four
days. Currently in development are Playboy, his Hefner movie, and the latest installment of another mega-successful action franchise, Beverly Hills Cop IV.
Ratner has expanded his brand into other areas, as well, namely television, for which he produced the successful Fox-TV program "Prison Break," and the upcoming comedy pilot, "Cop House." He has established his own book-publishing imprint, Rat Press, which releases projects that speak to his love of film history and vintage photography, with subjects ranging from Marlon Brando to Robert Evans to Jim Brown. He has even dabbled in photography himself, shooting covers for Vanity Fair and Interview, and ad campaigns for Baby Phat, Jimmy Choo and Jordache. His book Hilhaven Lodge: The Photo Booth Pictures is a compilation of photos taken of celebrity visitors to his home.
AN INFORMAL TOUR of that home offers glimpses into Ratner's psyche. Hilhaven Lodge, built in 1923, has been home to film royalty: both Kim Novak and Ingrid Bergman lived here, and the English-style architecture, wood accents, rustic stone fireplace and cathedral-like ceilings have played host to parties for several generations of Hollywood glitterati. The 1970s-style disco in the basement was the work of the home's most recent owner, Allan Carr, the late, flamboyant producer of Grease and Can't Stop the Music. It was the disco with its DJ booth, Egyptian statues and mirrored ceilings that sold Ratner on the house, and he has, according to the celebrity press, done his part to continue Hilhaven's festive tradition. While he obviously approaches his work with tireless zeal, Ratner has also found time to provide the gossip rags with plenty of material: past dating companions have included model Rebecca Gayheart, actress Zhang Ziyi and tennis star Serena Williams, and he has also been linked to notorious party girls Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.
He also has devoted a significant amount of time indulging a serious mania for collecting and not only watches. Down the hall from the disco is a pool room with walls full of glass cases holding a cavalcade of eclectic memorabilia from his career: Ratner's NYU student ID, a ticket to the Oscars, numerous movie posters and signed photos, a mint-condition copy of Giant-Size X-Men #1, undoubtedly used for research on the film, invitations from Hollywood players and Washington power brokers. The living room is bedecked with art, mostly vintage photography as well as modernist sculpture. It also holds numerous books, mostly photography volumes and biographies; old magazines; and antique and decorative ashtrays.
As with many celebrity watch enthusiasts, Ratner caught the collecting bug right around the time when he could afford to indulge it. "I was, like, 26 when I got my first big check, and that was when I could afford a good watch," he reveals. After being blown away by the vintage Rolex on the wrist of one of his watch-fan friends, and finding out that it came from Bain, Ratner tracked the latter down, and his watch education began in earnest. "I would hang out in Matt's store for hours just looking at every watch," he says. In a process that Bain calls a "slow graduation," Ratner worked his way up from moderately expensive, simple models to some of the rare holy grails of watch collecting.
One of Ratner's favorites, the so-called "Paul Newman" Rolex, is one of those grails. At first glance simply a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona of 1960s vintage, what makes this timepiece special is its dial, which features a number of subtle differences from the typical Daytona dial. The subdials have block indices; each sub-dial has crosshairs meeting in the center; and, most tellingly, the minutes subdial at 9 o'clock is marked at 15, 30, 45 and 60 rather than at 20, 40 and 60. Only watches in References 6239, 6241, 6262, 6263, 6264 and 6265 are considered authentic Paul Newmans; as the dials have been out of production since the early 1970s, these Rolex's are quite rare and astonishingly valuable however you can find Rolex replica watches on the web for an affordable price. As all the Paneristi out there are aware, Florence-based Panerai was a company that started making precision instruments such as compasses and calculators for the Italian Navy around the time of World War I. When Navy commandos needed timepieces they could use in underwater missions, they approached the company, which used its Swiss-watch industry connections to develop the quintessential Italian diving watch. The very first ones used movements and other parts provided by Rolex can also be found in the swiss made replica watches. Ratner's bulky, 47-mm Panerai is the genuine article, with a Rolex bezel and a Rolex "crown" logo on the oversized winding crown. It is also still on its original, weather-beaten leather strap, an added value for a collector that many otherwise-intact original Radiomirs cannot claim. "You could sell this strap," says Khankin, "and buy two new Panerai watches."
Another particular style of watch that Ratner seeks out is the triple-date moon-phase, most notably represented by another very coveted collectible in his lineup, Patek Philippe's Reference 1518, produced from 1941 through 1954 (only 281 pieces total), which was the first serially produced mechanical watch that combined a perpetual calendar with a chronograph. Ratner describes the Patek as one of his most cherished watches, and it's easy to believe him: Bain admits that he sold it to him seven years ago but "I haven't seen it in five years; it's been in the safe deposit box." Another Rolex, one of the most complicated in Ratner's collection, is a triple-date chronograph from 1950. It is another valuable watch that Ratner wears only occasionally, as wrist-watches often tend to get abused a bit in his line of work. The sets of one of his films known for car chases, explosions and martial arts throwdowns can be hazardous places for a watch. "I'm very active and hyper, always handling the camera, bumping into people; I really bang them around. That's why I don't have a lot of gaudy watches. I prefer to wear ones that only a few people in the world notice what makes them special."
While he's acknowledged as an auteur of the genre, he mildly bristles at the notion that he's primarily a director of high-octane action flicks, pointing out "I've done films in at least four different genres. I'd love to do a musical, crime drama, political drama. Fifty years ago, directors would go from genre to genre because their job was to be storytellers. It was like an assembly line. Now we tend to put directors in a box. It's like, 'Okay, you're the comedy guy, you're the
action guy...' Directors like Spielberg and Zemeckis are able to mix it up, but few others do."
That striving for versatility the desire not to be pigeonholed also extends to his watch tastes. The director prides himself on not limiting his scope to one style of watch or one brand. In fact, he hasn't even limited it to wrist-watches. His collection includes vintage dress pocket watches, including a platinum Cartier, an ultra-thin Vacheron Constantin in a platinum hunter's case and a Patek Philippe made, according to Bain, exclusively for Cartier. "What can I say? I have eclectic tastes," says Ratner. "There are collectors who only collect sports watches, or only collect Rolex Paul Newmans. I haven't really found my niche yet. I do know I've never really bought them for investment purposes. They're for me to enjoy. They're what I buy to reward myself. I've bought cars and given them back; two years later I'm tired of them. With the watches, I never want to do that; there's just too much history there."
When asked which of his many beloved timepieces he would choose if forced to choose only one, the inveterate film buff cannot help but illustrate his answer with a movie moment, one familiar to fans of classic, silver-screen comedy. "If I had to hold on to just one, it would definitely be my gold Paul Newman," he says. "It's the most beautiful, it's incredibly rare, and it's probably
tripled in value since I bought it. It would be like the scene with Steve Martin in The Jerk, where they told him he has to get out of his house and he's like, 'I don't need anything but this! This
chair, I'm taking with me!' That's what I'd be like. Take everything, but you're not getting this watch. This watch is coming with me."

A decade ago a watch company that made its own movements was a rare, exotic bird. No more. Since then a flock of watch companies, at least 14 by my count, have become manufactures, shifting from buying all their movements from outside suppliers to producing at least one movement in-house. This is despite the hefty price of doing so designing a movement and putting it into production takes years and costs millions of dollars.
What was behind this (still continuing) do-it-yourself movement in movement production? There were several forces at work. First, there was the decade's stupendous rise in mechanical-watch production. At the start of the decade, Switzerland produced 2.7 million mechanical pieces per year. By last year, that figure had grown by 70%. That put a tremendous squeeze on movement supplies (as it did on supplies of all types of high-end components). Watch companies recognized that if they wanted a reliable source of movements they'd have to provide it themselves.
That squeeze was all the tighter due to a decision by the Swatch Group's ETA subsidiary, the king of Swiss movement makers. In 2002, the company announced that it would stop selling unfinished movements (also called movement "kits" or "ebauches") to companies not owned by the Swatch Group. Two of its larger movement customers, Sellita and Jaquet (now called La Joux-Perret), protested the decision to a Swiss government agency called the Competition Commission, or ComCo. In September 2004, it ruled that the Swatch Group could start reducing its ebauches sales. The cutbacks started at 15% for the first four years and this year jumped to 50%. Next year the figure will be 75% and in 2011 ETA will stop ebauches sales entirely. The announcement sent the brands scrambling to develop their own movement-production capacity. (Sellita, in the meantime, introduced what the industry calls "clones" of the most popular ETA movements that it had been assembling, including calibers 2824, 2892, 2836 and 2834 known as Sellita calibers 200, 300, 220 and 240, respectively. The patents on these calibers had run out, so Sellita was free to duplicate them in the face of the ebauches cut-off).
Finished movements, especially high-end ones, were also in short supply throughout much of the decade. The Swatch Group still sells them the cut backs are of movement kits only but has conceded that its production capacity isn't always equal to the orders that come pouring in. In its 2008 annual report, issued in April, for instance, the company said, "Especially for expensive watch models, it is still difficult to deliver all back orders in time."
The supply pinch wasn't the only reason for the rush to develop in-house movements. Prestige was just as important. Almost as soon as the mechanical revival started, in the 1980s, a manufacture a company that designs at least one of its movements and manufactures the plates and bridges for it radiated a beatific aura in the eyes of many watch aficionados. Those manufactures included Patek Philippe, Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Girard-Perregaux and a few others. (Not everyone agreed that manufacture movements were necessarily better than supplied ones. Throughout the decade, many watch fans, and watch companies, argued that what matters is the movement, not who made it.)
Then, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, in-house movements caught fire. In 1999, for example, Girard-Perregaux unveiled four new in-house movements and announced it would be making all of its calibers itself by the following year. Also in 1999, Audemars Piguet began serial production of its own, hand-wound base caliber, which can also be seen in the Replica Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Tourbillon Watch. The next year, Rolex introduced its chronograph Caliber 4130, which would replace the Zenith movements it had been using in its Daytona
Cosmograph models. At that point Rolex movements became 100 percent home-made. Vacheron Constantin introduced its hand-wound Caliber 1400, its first in-house movement in the modern era, in 2000.
The parade continued, joined by brands large and small. In the mid-2000s, Panerai, Frederique Constant, Bulgari and Ulysse Nardin all launched their first watches with in-house movements. Montblanc did so in 2008, followed by "Chronoswiss, Breitling and Carl F. Bucherer in 2009. As the newcomers arrived, established manufactures like Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin and Piaget increased the number of in-house movements used in their watches. Audemars, for instance, used the 280 million Swiss francs it received in 2000 from the I sale of its 40 percent share in Jaeger-LeCoultre to expand its movement-making company, AP Renaud & Papi.
A handful of companies, including Patek Philippe, Rolex, Parmigiani Fleurier, Roger Dubuis and Bovet went a step further, making their own hairsprings. The Swatch Group's Nivarox subsidiary has enjoyed a near-monopoly on hair I spring production since the mechanical revival began.
The march of the manufactures isn't over, not by a long shot, we'll bet. Tutima says it will soon join in, and so will Hublot and Armin Strom. Others are sure to do so, too.

Hublonium, Zenithium, Ticalium, Ultimum, Easium carbonitride: they sound like ingredients in a
comic-book plot to wipe out Planet Earth. But they're actually new watch materials: products, along with many others, of the now-feverish quest for more durable, lower-maintenance, lighter, and, on occasion, simply more interesting cases and movements. It's the same quest that led watch manufacturers to titanium in the 1970s and aluminum in the 1980s.

As the decade began, carbon fiber, instantly recognizable by its basket weave like pattern, was the hot new material for watch dials and other components. In 2003, Rado lived up to its reputation as a materials innovator (the brand had pioneered the use of hardmetal in the 1960s and ceramic in the 1990s) by launching the v10k, which was made of hardmetal coated with diamond and was, Rado said, the hardest watch in the world.

Then, mid-decade, came a flood of watches incorporating unorthodox materials. Jaeger-LeCoultre launched its Gyro-tourbillon 1, whose outer tourbillon cage was made of aluminum. Richard Mille introduced the RM009, which had a case made of alusic, a mixture of aluminum and silicon used in space technology, and a baseplate of aluminum lithium. These materials made the RM009 a light-as-Tinkerbell 28 grams without the strap. Villemont unveiled a watch with a case made of Ultimum, an alloy of palladium, platinum and ruthenium.

The biggest news in new materials was the relaunch, in 2005, of the Hublot brand, whose flagship model was and is the Big Bang Fusion. The first Big Bang models incorporated stamped carbon, ceramic, tantalum and Kevlar. As the decade continued, the brand's CEO, Jean-Claude Biver, became the watch industry's most vocal champion of unlikely,

This tiny guide to looking after your wristwatch is meant to help answer some of those questions we all have but haven't bothered to really find out the answer to. Certain sides of watch maintenance cause much argument between watch buffs. Many people are of that old adage - if it ain't bust, then don't fix it.

To help to keep your watch running for the future years, these are some things you'll need to know.

Adjusting Different Band Types...

You will find that the band wants adjustments when you have bought a second user or new timepiece:

In the case of band, there's often some adjustment available in the clasp itself, through the use of a spring loaded pin which locks into holes in the clasp. Usually no problem to attempt this adjustment using a tool thin enough to press the pin from the outside and so release it. Careful! These tiny pins may fly across a room and could go missing. Before attempting this adjustment, make sure that the watch is on a cloth so as not to scratch the case or dent the crown.

Straps usually have multiple holes so finding a snug position is mostly straightforward. If not, employ a button hold sewing tool to make a new hole.

Wait, the band's links might need to be removed.

Some bracelets use screws to connect links to one another, while others use push pins. If you don't have the tools to do this ( such as watchmakers' screwdrivers or bracelet pin removal tools ) then generally it is best left to a watchmaker. In the case of screws and if you've got the correct screwdriver then make sure that the bracelet is held terribly resolutely before making an attempt to unscrew the screw ; again there are expert bracelet holders for this. That said, you can avoid damaging the screw slot by ensuring the screwdriver is of the correct size and thickness.

Push pins according to the small arrow that indicate the way they deserve to be pushed out; lower to mid-range watches are simply split-type. Again, it is feasible to remove them yourself if you've got an instrument which will fit the pin hole right and if you can secure the band. Light tapping of the tool is frequently enough to remove the split pin type. The links are then inserted and the pins replaced from the opposite end to removal - very carefully! Its better to seek a professional watchmaker if you're not cushy doing this.

The solid type pins can be infinitely more problematical as bands employing these often have special collars within the band links themselves which firstly must be in the proper place when the band is assembled and second are incredibly easy to use. The fit is highly tight, and I recommend that you let a watchmaker do this. If you do not want to be sorry, it is better to be safe!

Winding your timepiece....

How do I wind a manual watch?

Try and wind a manual wind watch at the same time every day to have more consistent timekeeping, preferably in the mornings to have optimum power during the day. When winding a manual wind watch, do so relatively slowly and solidly ; when it is absolutely wound you'll feel resistance as the mainspring tightens. That is your sign that it is good! Don't try and force it any farther as damage might be done both to the mainspring itself and to parts in the escapement.

Remember this. When winding a manual wind watch, it is highly a good idea to take the watch off! Why? Well, if you keep the watch on and wind it, it is quite possible to put unnecessary load on the winding stem at all points but especially where the stem attaches to the winding crown. I have seen folk causing a finger under the crown then moving said finger back and forth to wind it. This isn't a smart idea.

My watch is an automated, does it need winding?

If it died, then it does. Swing the watch gently in an arc for about a minute to get it running if your automated has no manual winding capability. For those with a manual wind capability, you have to put the movement in a perfect state of wind to start with by giving the watch approximately 35 to 40 light turns. To keep the watch wound for some time, ordinary arm movement is sufficient. It's alright to leave the watch off overnight without further manual winding if you are reasonably active.

Setting your timepiece...

When setting the time and date?

Normally, there are three crown positions for a watch provided with a date feature: for date setting, pull out with one click; for time setting, pulled out with two clicks; and, naturally, in. It's very simple. 2 tips on how to try this. First, wind the hands slowly when setting the time; doing this much too fast will prematurely wear the elements. Relatively slowly and gently is fine and ideally in a clockwise direction. Unless a watch allows this in particular, don't adjust the time backwards through midnight. Twenty-five sets will be manufactured, each with a price tag of $412,000. Hugues de Pins, the company's new U.S. president, said he expects four or five U.S. customers to buy sets (the watches are not sold individually), and that they'll probably be the same collectors, for the most part, who bought sets one and two.

The watches contain Vacheron Constantin's manufacture caliber 2460G4, which indicates the time via disks rather than hands and thus provides room in the middle of the dial for the masks. The windows at 10 and 2 o'clock display the hour and minutes, respectively, while two apertures at 8 and 4 o'clock show the day and date. It's no coincidence that this sleekly elegant, three-handed wrist watch, whose sole objective is to display the correct time, bears the name of one of the most creative minds in the Lange watchmaking dynasty of Glashutte, Germany. Richard Lange (1845-1932), the eldest son of A. Lange & Sohne founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange, devoted his career to researching watch technology and above all to improving time keeping precision. The wire must first be drawn until it is a mere 0.05 mm in diameter. Then the wire is milled, wound and heated. Its outer end is then bent by hand into the distinctive Breguet curvature. Each of these demanding jobs is performed on the premises at A. Lange & Sohne. The manufacturing processes undergo continual improvement at the company's Technology and Development Center, which Lange inaugurated the same year it began making its own balance springs.

Balancing Act
Making the best possible regulating system means finding the best possible pairing between the balance wheel and spring and fine tuning these components so that they collaborate as perfectly as possible. To do so, the firm's technicians must take into account such givens as the diameter of the balance, the type of fine adjustment mechanism, and the method used to affix the spring. With these invariables in mind, Lange's specialists determine the spring's external diameter, number of coils and exact shape of its Breguet terminal curve. This curve is adapted to suit the system used with Lange's balance springs. The springs and balances are matched as though they were prospective fiances: i.e., only one spring is the perfect mate for each balance. Deviations ranging from 30 to 40 seconds are permissible. This preliminary work makes it easierto perform the next task: finely adjusting the six eccentric screws on the balance's rim. These adjustments can compensate for deviations up to 120 seconds. According to an expert in the Technology and Development Center, perfectly matching the features of the balance spring to those of the balance is only possible when the manufacturer makes its own balance springs. The company's balance spring know how is always growing. Sometimes Lange's balance spring specialists are asked to create a single balance spring for use in a very special watch model. The research needed to do this adds to the trove of experience from which Lange's experts can benefit in the future.
The Richard Lange's balance spring is affixed with a special balance spring clamp, first used on the company's Double Split watch, which was introduced in 2004. The point of this clamp is to make fine adjustment easier. The watch also has a special positioner in the barrel, which ensures that only the constant portion of the torque is conveyed from the mainspring. A special oscillation-measuring device makes it possible to isolate the rate-altering influences of the escapement and the gear train as they act on the mainspring. The deviation of rate caused by these influences remains within extremely narrow tolerances.
The watch's rate results prove that the work that went into developing the movement was worthwhile. The watch we reviewed was taken directly from the production line. It was subjected both to a rate test on the wrist and to a special series of tests to which Lange subjects all its movements. The Lange designed tests measure the watch's performance in six positions in both the fully wound state and after the watch has been running for 24 hours. The two rates for each position are compared. The tests yielded the following profile for the Richard Lange. When fully wound, its time keeping performance among the various positions deviated between a daily gain of two seconds (dial up) and a daily loss of one second (crown right). The resulting average deviation of rate was +0.4 seconds. The average amplitude was 299 degrees. The greatest difference among the rates was 2.6 seconds. After 24 hours had elapsed, the watch's deviation ranged from a daily gain of three seconds (dial up) to a daily loss of one second (crown right and crown down). The mean daily rate was calculated at a gain of 0.8 seconds. The average amplitude was 278 degrees. The greatest difference among the rates was 3.9 seconds. All of these data were entered into Lange's formula to calculate the isochronism error, which is determined by the greatest difference of rate within a single position (fully wound and after 24 hours of running). When these calculations were performed, the result was a value of 0.3. The positional error, or greatest deviation of rate when positions are changed, was also calculated. The result here was 0.4. The final value for our wristwatch was thus 0.7, which lies significantly below Lange's maximum acceptable value of 2.

Pretty Precision
The watch not only ran well, it was also a pleasure to wear. Its dial is extremely easy to read, but that's not all; it's also very good-looking. The gold, rhodium-plated hour and minute hands are well proportioned and the long, blued-steel seconds hand sweeps majestically across the plane of the solid silver dial. This hand's tip precisely indicates the fractions of seconds on the subdivided scale around the periphery of the dial. The balance completes 21,600 semi-oscillations per hour, so the seconds hand advances incrementally at 1/6-second intervals. The peripheral-scale is calibrated accordingly. When we compared the seconds display
of the Richard Lange with the timekeeping of a radio controlled time piece, we found that the deviations amounted to mere fractions of a second. Of course, the naked eye cannot follow the quick, tiny jumps of the seconds hand, but if one looks through a watchmaker's loupe, one can see how precisely the hand's tip passes each individual 1/6-second marker along the scale. The separate gear train for the seconds hand has been specially redesigned to ensure that this hand moves smoothly.
The staff of the fourth wheel bears a second fourth wheel positioned on the movement side above the plane of the three-quarters plate. An idler gear meshes with this additional fourth wheel, conveying power to the central wheel of the seconds display. A braking spring had originally been planned to ensure the smooth running of the seconds hand, but the sticklers at Lange weren't satisfied with the way the seconds hand ran. Furthermore, because it's large, the hand needed a strong braking spring, which sapped considerable energy from the gear train and had an adverse effect on the rate.
A technically interesting solution was found while the device was still in its prototype stage. The braking spring was eliminated and a two-part idler gear was installed. The two disks of this gear are able to rotate in opposite directions and are equipped with a spring to provide the necessary tension. Both planes of the gear mesh with the second fourth wheel and with the wheel of the seconds display. This meshing eliminates play between the gears' teeth and ensures that the seconds hand runs more smoothly. Furthermore, this solution makes it possible to dispense with a braking spring, which, if it had still been present, would have unnecessarily sapped energy and caused the balance's amplitude to decline by 15 or Lange Caliber L041.2 to six millimeters. Lange's watchmakers manually assemble the majority of this caliber's 199 individual parts. The entire device, of course, is assembled twice.
The movement is finely adjusted in five positions. It boasts all of this brand's hallmark features: the plates are made of untreated nickel silver and are elaborately embellished with beveled edges, circular graining and Glashutte waves; the screws are blued; and the balance cock is manually engraved, thus making each Lange watch one of a kind. Peering through the non-reflective pane of sapphire crystal in the watch's back, a connoisseur can see the impulses from the balance and the running of the fourth wheels. It was a famous moment in watch history: in 1927, a stenographer I named Mercedes Gleitze, in a bid to become the first Englishwoman I to swim the English Channel, made the chilly crossing with a Rolex strapped to her wrist. The watch survived, as no watch that preceded it, without its special gaskets and screw-in crown and caseback, would have. It was the start of something big. Many of the new divers' watches have helium valves, which release helium that has built up inside the case so that the pressure it creates won't blow the crystal off the watch. Helium valves are of use to divers and scientists who work at great depth in diving chambers, where they breathe a special mix of air containing helium, whose molecules are so small that they penetrate the watch case. The valve allows the gradual release of pressure during the diver's decompression phase.
Graham's new Chronof ighter Oversize Diver (it's 46 mm in diameter) has not only a helium valve, but a chronograph that can be used underwater. It contains the mechanical Caliber 60, made by the chronograph specialist Dubois Depraz in the Vallee de Joux. It is noteworthy for its 60-minute counter, which is located in the center of the dial and thus easy to read. It also has a 24-hour subdial at 9 o'clock.
The 45 mm case of the Ebel Sportwave Aquatica 500 has a helium release valve and is water-resistant to 500 meters. It contains the ETA automatic caliber 2892-2. The limited edition of the diving watch has an orange, black or silvered dial.
The Sea Hawk II Pro from Girard-Perregaux has not one helium-release valve but two. That's not its only extreme feature: it's also water-resistant to 3,000 meters. The watch is 44 mm in diameter and has a 3-mm-thick crystal. The movement inside the jumbo-sized, titanium case is a surprise: it's an ultra-flat GP 033RO. The movement, an automatic with date and power-reserve displays, is made by GP itself and is based on the company's GP 3300 caliber.
Zenith's Defy Xtreme Open Stealth is fitted with the company's famous El Primero automatic chronograph caliber. It, too, has a helium-release valve, located next to the 10 o'clock position. The watch is water-resistant to 1,000 meters. The case is made of titanium; the movement's bridges and cocks are made from an alloy called Zenithium Z+, which absorbs jolts and blows.
Yet another new helium-valve model: the Carlos Coste Chronograph Limited Edition (2,000 pieces) from Oris. The watch is made of titanium and is water-resistant to 1,000 meters. It's named for the Oris-sponsored free-diving champion Carlos Coste. The case is 47 mm in diameter; the movement is an ETA Valjoux 7750.
Helium valves, depth gauges and chronographs aren't the only special features found on divers' watches these days. Jaeger-LeCoultre's Master Compressor Diving Pro Geographic has a world-time function, thanks to its Geographic automatic 979 caliber. The wearer positions the name of the city representing a particular time zone in the aperture at 6 o'clock and the time in that zone is shown on a subdial at 9 o'clock. The watch also has a mechanical depth gauge, visible on the left side of the case, composed of a membrane that expands or contracts as the water pressure exerted on its metal head changes. Those changes act on a center-mounted, blue depth-indicator hand. The depth-gauge scale is logarithmic so that it gives a more detailed reading for the first 40 meters than for depths beyond that (at which recreational divers do not dive). The gauge goes up to 80 meters. The watch itself is water-resistant to 300 meters. The case is 46.3 mm in diameter and is made of titanium.
The Aquatimer Split Minute Chronograph from IWC Schaffhausen enables the wearer to time two intervals simultaneously. It does so by means of an additional center-mounted minutes hand controlled by a switch on the left side of the case. The watch contains the ETA Valjoux 7750. In addition, the automatic movement rewinds only uni directionally in response to new research that suggests wristwatches rewind twice as fast with a single-directional mechanism as compared to a dual-directional one.
The watch has many aesthetic elements as well, some overt in the structural design, some down to the most minute details. After saving some pennies up and also attending a conference for a unrelated business I was able to venture the streets of New York. You will not find any luxury high end replica watches out here.

So far, the makers of these watches appear to mainly be making counterfeits of current and recent model watches. Presumably, there is not a large enough market for fakes of older and vintage watches to make it worthwhile to pursue.

But also understand that counterfeit watches are not a new concept -- so you may occasionally encounter fake watches made many years ago. Some of these older fakes were watches of other cheaper brands that were relabeled by repainting the dial with a different logo and at times even stamping the back or movement with marks like would have appeared on the other brand.

Possessing such a watch is not illegal. But the maker and sellers of the replicas are usually in violation of the legal copyrights on the original manufacturer's copyrights and trademarks.

I found a great deal on a luxury watch brand I haven't heard of, is it a counterfeit?

Not necessarily, but they might be luxury watch imposters. Fakes copy the well known brand names you probably have heard of. But there is another category of wristwatch products being sold on the Internet and through magazine ads that are not actually counterfeit--but they are sold using outrageous misrepresentations and should be equally avoided.

These "luxury watch imposters" are inexpensive watches being misleadingly represented as if they were fine luxury timepieces. They are sold under their own brand name, so they are not fakes of another company's brand. But their products are of modest to staggeringly cheap manufacture and have none of the merits of the fine, expensive brands they allude to. The typical scam on these are a combination of:

An impressive Swiss, German or European sounding name.
An impressive "retail price" or "RRP" (recommended retail price).
Fancy verbiage that sounds like what a luxury watch brand would say.
Impressive comparisons of features to those of "other" luxury timepieces.
A special price you can buy it for that is incredibly below the retail price.

The deception here is that claimed retail price is a complete lie. These watches sell regularly at prices that are a trivial fraction--often as much as 70-95% off--of their claimed retail value. How can they sell them so cheap? Simple, they are cheap watches. Ones made to be profitably sold in the low, usually US$10-75, price range of their actual asking price. Any perception that these luxury imposters are even remotely worth in the US$250-2500 range is nothing more than pure marketing bravado and intentional deception.

Consumer protection agencies clearly label such exaggerated retail pricing as a misleading and deceptive sales tactic. The following is an example from the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC):

"Many members of the purchasing public believe that a manufacturer's list price, or suggested retail price, is the price at which an article is generally sold. Therefore, if a reduction from this price is advertised, many people will believe that they are being offered a genuine bargain. To the extent that list or suggested retail prices do not in fact correspond to prices at which a substantial number of sales of the article in question are made, the advertisement of a reduction may mislead the consumer."

Here are some tips on spotting luxury watch imposter brands:

No real luxury watch sells new for a street, catalog or Internet price of under US$250.
No real luxury watch sells new for more than 50% off of its genuine retail price--even from the most aggressive discount dealers.
No real luxury brands are ever sold at "fire sales," massive inventory clearances or end of model year closeouts. They are valuable jewelry items that no business ever has to resort to liquidating at a below-wholesale loss.
A real luxury brand will be well discussed on the Internet. Do a Google search for the brand name. Try searching for chronoswiss replica or swiss made replica watches. If you can't find collectors and owners discussing the merits of the brand, it is unlikely to be a true luxury brand.
A real luxury brand will be sold through well known dealers. If you see a brand sold mostly on auction sites--and never anywhere near it's claimed retail price--it is not a luxury brand.
Only in rare cases do these ultra-cheap imposter brands have official company websites that showcase the products. Just because you see a incredibly sophisticated website doesn't ensure that the brand is actually a valid luxury brand.

Three specific brands known to play the luxury watch imposter game are:

Klaus Kobec -- Advertises heavily in magazines as being comparable to US$2,000+ watches, with a retail price of US$900, but can be yours for only US$200.
Krug Baumen -- Sold on auction sites. Claims "RRP" in the £475-625 (US$900-1,200) range, yet they routinely sell in the £15-50 (US$30-100) range. Even has an impressive looking official website for the brand.
Montre Suisse -- Sold on auction sites especially in the United Kingdom, often in bulk lots of 5 to 10 pieces. Claims a retail price of £129.99 (approximately US$250), yet are sold in any quantity you want for less than £5.99 (US$12) each. Ironically, their name translates to "Swiss style."

Ultimately, any deal on a new luxury timepiece that looks too good to be true... is assuredly a scam. The economics of the manufacturing and selling products make it impossible for new wristwatches to be sold at 70-95% off of a legitimate retail price. Deceptive retail prices are used to get buyers excited that they are "saving" hundreds of dollars on an item. An excitement that causes them to overlook that they are really only purchasing low-end merchandise that is neither a luxury product nor worth anything more than the dime-store price they actually paid for it.

Why aren't fakes stopped by company legal action or international law enforcement?

Several reasons. One, these sellers are like cockroaches. You stomp one and two more pop out. The legal costs of pursuing them are practically money flushed down the toilet because it never stops the problem. The only way to effectively attack the fake market is to cut off their Asia-based sources -- which requires international cooperation. And frankly right now, the government and international enforcement agents across the world have more important global threats to protect their citizens from than just fake watches.

Two, anyone who wants a US$1,000 to US$20,000+ watch and will settle for a US$100 fake of it was not a serious buyer. They either would never have bought the real thing, or will toy with the fake and eventually return to their original desire and buy a real one after the brand-name image makes them feel good, but the fake itself disappoints. So while these products do infringe on the name brands, they don't really hurt sales, therefore manufacturers do not have a financial incentive to aggressively pursue them. They tend to do enough that they can prove in any court cases that do arise that they have enforced their trademarks. But more than that is profitless to them.

And third, where the cheap fake is being sold for a high price as the real thing are cases of fraud between the buyer and the seller, to be handled by the police and legal system. There is no reason for the manufacturer of the real thing to get involved. Wasn't their product, wasn't their dealers, the only connection to them was a forgery.

While most of us dislike the fake wristwatch market, the reality is that the time, money, resources and incentives to do much seriously about it are just not there. And realize that most of the people being cheated buying fakes sold as the real thing were playing a risky game -- buying from questionable or unauthorized sources, ignoring common sense warning signs on an expensive purchase, merely to get a cheaper price on something that looked like what they wanted. They played a game and they lost. So my extent of sympathy for those buyers is somewhat limited -- especially to the point that I do not want manufacturers to raise prices so they can spend the smart watch buyer's money protecting the foolish watch buyers from their poor shopping decisions.

Counterfeit watches appear to come mainly from Asian countries. People out to make a quick buck manufacture these watches--often with either little understanding of or contempt for European or American copyrights and trademarks they are stealing.

Are there fakes to watch out for with vintage watches?

Yes. Fakes of some sorts have been around for a while. The concept of a watch being totally faked from scratch is fairly modern--mostly in the past 20 years. But fake older watches exist and usually fall in one of the following categories:

A generic make watch doctored up with fake Big Name Brand markings. Most commonly, someone merely repainted the dial with a Big Name Brand logo. Though occasionally Big Name Brand markings were etched or stickered on the movement or inside, too. Usually there is no attempt to match a specific model of Big Name Brand--just to make something else look like it is part of the Big Name Brand brand.
A generic make watch doctored up with some genuine Big Name Brand or look-alike parts added to it. Usually still not trying to exactly replicate a specific Big Name Brand model, but looking like it is part of the Big Name Brand brand.
A *genuine* Big Name Brand watch doctored up with genuine Big Name Brand or lookalike parts to falsely resemble a rarer or more valuable Big Name Brand model. A prime example of this are fairly common 1960s OMEGA Seamaster 120 watches that someone replaces/repaints the dial and adds a diver's bezel to make them closely resemble the rare and much more valuable Seamaster 300 of the same time period.
A *genuine* Big Name Brand watch that the movement failed and was replaced with a generic movement--because the replacement was not available, was too expensive or to cheat the customer. Sometimes a watchmaker would etch the Big Name Brand logo on the replacement movement or salvage the part of the original movement that had the logo or serial number on it and fit it on the replacement movement.

and finally--this you see mostly with ROLEX--fake 18K gold cases and bracelets with genuine ROLEX movements salvaged out of older stainless steel models.

Why do people buy fakes and what does it say about them?

Through years of studing fakes and talking with people about them, we have never heard any good justification for buying or wearing them... only excuses why some people believe they deserve the perception of owning 'luxury' products without having to go to the effort and expense to buy the real things.

Curiously, people who buy fakes seem to have a contradicting thought process. They act like it is 'only a name' when they choose a counterfeit product with a premium brand name on it. Counterfeit buyers seem to be ignorant of or ignore the real merits that make the genuine item far more valuable than the fakes--they just consider one watch to be about the same as any other.

But they obviously consider the luxury name brand important enough that they are willing to accept items of highly dubious quality and origin just to get that brand name on them. So we have yet to find how to interpret people's willingness to pay for counterfeit versions of 'the name'--especially when they have contempt for or ignorance of why the name is valuable--as anything other than wanting to cheaply impress themself and others.

Here's what buying and wearing fake/counterfeit watches really says about the wearer:

Poor Grasp of Value - Replicas are made to sell by looking like something far more valuable than they are. They are seldom made for quality, carry no warranty, are made from cheap parts and are usually not worth repairing. They are basically overpriced disposable products, so are a poor value for your money.
Lack of Integrity - Those that choose cheap replicas to try to impress others that they have a real luxury watch are using falsehoods to represent themselves. So that makes people wonder what else about how you represent yourself is false.
Weak Ethics - Choosing replica watches shows the world that you are willing to support unethical and illegal businesses--not giving a care about the ethics and legalities involved if they get in the way of getting something that you want cheaply.
Gullible - Especially where someone unknowingly buys a fake, they show themselves to be easily deceived and someone that throws caution to the winds trying to get a super deal on an expensive item.
Isolated - Certainly there are no clubs for owners of fakes. No comraderie among fellow owners. No sharing of tips, tricks and performance issues. No assistance with operation, warranty or repair issues. Fake buyers are on their own with nobody to care, nobody to help and nobody to compliment or encourage them--except for the occasional person you might encounter that doesn't know enough about watches to realize you are trying to 'impress' them with a cheap counterfeit.

Where do people buy fakes?

The most common places are street vendors in major cities, flea markets, less reputable pawn shops, and Internet auction sites. Generally, these are all places where fly-by-night sellers can operate. Normally, counterfeits sell for anywhere from $50 to 150. Sellers of these illegally produced merchandise are frequently pursued by law enforcement and arrested.

In many cases, the buyer will understand that they are not buying genuine merchandise. But sometimes the buyer is completely unaware they are buying a fake. They may even pay hundreds of dollars -- believing they are getting an incredible deal on an expensive watch.

What should I do if I encounter a fake?

Simply walk away. While they may look similar to the real thing, they are normally very cheap and short lived watches. Even at their appealing prices of US$50-150, you would be much better off buying a genuine watch of reputable brand than buying these cheap counterfeits. As mentioned above, the life span of most of these fakes in only 2-3 years of use. That is a poor deal for the price.

How do I identify a counterfeit watch?

Know the real models -- browse the manufacturer catalogs and the display collections of an authorized dealer. Handle the real thing. Be familiar with not only the face of the watch, but also the bracelet, clasp, and the back of the watch.
Understand that manufacturer catalogs and websites usually do not show all the models and variations they make. So just because you do not see an item in a catalog or on an official website is not by itself proof that a watch is fake.

Are the logos and face details incorrectly or poorly reproduced?
Are details wrong? Often, fakes confuse names and parts from different watches. Or a replica may have style of hands normally found on a different model watch.
Does it have any unusual, unexpected, missing, or non-functional features? While it looks really neat, not very many genuine fine watches have see-through backs. Fakes may not replicate unusual features, such as a helium relief valve, or those features may not function. Chronographs may have non-operating subdials and stopwatch functions.
Are any of the colors or texture details wrong? Fakes sometimes come in color combinations or bezel textures not available on the real watches.
Clasp on bracelet may look different and have a much simpler latch mechanism. Bracelets my be made simpler.
The quartz Chronograph dilemma: Because of the complexities involved, you will seldom find a fake watch with working chronograph (stopwatch) functions that has an automatic movement. So if you see what should be a mechanical movement chronograph where the second hand is moving in 1 second increments, it is likely a fake.

How do I avoid mis-identifying a real watch as a fake?

Fine watch makers such as Rolex, Omega, IWC, Breitling, Cartier and others have made thousands of models over the past century. Many older models look similar enough to current or other models that their differences can be mistaken as signs of a fake. Similarly, manufacturers sometimes made some unusual or custom versions for specific International markets that would be unknown or seem odd even to people experienced with that brand of watch in their part of the world.

So how do you tell when a watch is really a real one? The number one test is to find the manufacturer's serial number. On modern Omega watches, the 8-digit serial number is laser etched on the outside of the watch--usually on the back of one of the lugs, or on the back of the case. On older Omega watches, the number is still 8 digits, but almost always inside the watch, engraved into the movement. Rolex watches normally have their model and serial numbers on the ouside side of the case, between the lugs where the bracelet or strap attach.

The presence of a correctly engraved or laser etched serial number is often enough to confirm the watch is real--except for fake Rolex watches that often do bear fake serial numbers. The next step is to have the manufacturer validate the serial number. It is best if you can also include a photo of the watch with your request. They will respond with the technical details that you can use to confirm that the serial number does indeed belong to that watch. Even if the watch is genuine, having a manufacturer's representative check the serial number and view the watch or a photo of it can also identify if the watch has been altered. Especially on older watches, they may have had their dials repainted (sometime to completely different color combinations) or had exterior replacement parts (especially crowns and bracelets) that were not original to that specific model.

That's because they have far fewer moving parts -just the gears that move the hands. (A digital watch has no moving parts at all). All that most quartz watches really require is that when the case is opened for a batter change, it be cleaned of accumulated dirt. However, some expensive quartz analog watch movements should have their gear train lubricated ever eight to 10 years. For inexpensive quartz watches, this isn't worth doing.

8.How often does a replica watch's water resistance need to be checked? All water resistant watches need to have their water resistance checked ever time the batter is changed or the case is opened for any other reason. That's because when the case is opened, the caskets that keep the water out of the case are dislodged. (These gaskets, or O rings, are located inside the case at the joints where the case meets the case back, crown and crystal.) For this reason it's important that when the battery in a water-resistant watch needs to be changed, the watch be taken to a repair center that has water-resistance testing equipment. In some instances, water-resistance should be checked between battery changes. If the watch is worn in the water, frequently or exposed to a lot of sweat, it should be checked at least ever two years and, if exposure to water is very frequent, ever year, says Efim Khankin, owner of Universal Watch & Jewelry Co., Birmingham, Mich.

9. Do you need to wind a mechanical replica watch every day? The watch will run better if you do. "You always get better performance from a watch when it's fully wound than when it's wound down," says Daniel Fenwick, technical manager at Swatch Group (formerly SMH) Customer Service in Lancaster, Pa. It's best to wind it even if you don't intend to wear it. That will prevent the movement's lubricants from congealing. This doesn't, of course, apply to an automatic, or self-winding watch. This type of watch should be wound initially to get it started. If the wearer is reasonably active and wears the watch for 12 to 15 hours a day, it will remain fully wound, Fenwick says.

10. Does it matter which direction you turn the crown when you're setting a replica watch? On most mechanical watches it doesn't. On some, particularly those equipped with calendars, you should only move the hands clockwise. The manufacturer's instructions will include directions for setting. On quartz watches, it's OK to move the hands in either direction to set them. Manufacturers point out, though, that you can eliminate the free play in minutes hand by setting it in the following way (a quartz watch, unlike a mechanical one, tends to have play in its minutes hands due to the lack of tension in the gear train): Move the minutes hand clockwise until it is a few minutes past where it is supposed to be, then move it counterclockwise back to the correct spot.

11. Will heat and cold affect a replica watch's accuracy? Heat and cold will affect the time-keeping ability of a quartz watch. Quartz crystals, whose extremely steady vibrations are responsible for the unrivaled accuracy of quartz watches, are cut so they perform optimally at room temperature, says Fenwick. A temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit will throw the timing off by about 1 second a day, as will one of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme temperature will also affect the accuracy of a mechanical watch, but not as much as other factors (see below). One reason is that hot and cold cause the metal parts of a watch movement to expand and contract (though advances in metallurgy have made this less of a problem than in the past). Another reason is that heat and cold affect the viscosity of the oil that lubricates the movement, and thereby affect the movement's accuracy. 12. What other factors affect the accuracy of a replica watch? In a mechanical watch, wearing habits such as when the watch is wound, how long it's worn each day and what position it lies in when it is not being worn all play a critical role in determining how consistently a watch runs. Although a typical mechanical watch might gain or lose about 5 minutes a month, it's possible, by adjusting the watch to fit a wearer's regular habits, to achieve much higher accuracy than that. "The more consistent your wearing habits, the more consistent the time-telling will be," says Joseph Cerullo, technical director at the Movado Group, Lyndhurst, N.J. None of these factors make any difference with a quartz watch. With quartz, temperature is the only variable that affects the accuracy of the movement.

13. Can a mechanical replica watch be worn playing sports? In general yes, Cerullo says. All or nearly all mechanical watches manufactured today are equipped with anti-shock devices that protect the watch's balance-staff pivots - the part of the watch movement most vulnerable to damage from impact. These devices are usually effective enough to protect the watch from the shock it encounters when you hit a tennis or golf ball, for instance. Nonetheless, there is a small change that an especially hard knock could damage not only the balance but the rotor axle, which is some automatic movements serves to secure the rotor to the watch movement. So deciding whether to wear your mechanical watch or not while playing sports is a matter of risk assessment. The odds, however, are on your side.

14. Is the same true of a quartz replica watch? There is very little chance of damaging the movement of a quartz watch while playing sports -a quartz watch does not contain the delicate balance-staff pivots that make anti-shock devices necessary in mechanical watches. You can, of course, damage other parts of the watch -the crystal of instance- whether the watch is quartz or mechanical.

15. Will anything damage a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal? Don't be misled by the term "scratch resistant". It doesn't mean "scratch proof". The most scratch-resistant crystals are made of synthetic sapphire, an extremely hard mineral that measures 9 on the Mohs hardness scale (diamond, the hardest natural substance known to man, measures 10). Despite its high rating, sapphire can be abraded by some materials. Brushing against a synthetic stone surface, like those found on some furniture or walls, for example, could cause a scratch. Also keep in mind that the more scratch-resistant a material, the more brittle it is, so scratch-resistant crystals are more likely to chip or shatter than non-scratch-resistant ones.

16. Will wearing a watch on the inside of your wrist affect its accuracy? If it's a quartz watch, no. The position of a quartz watch has no bearing on its time-keeping ability. A mechanical watch is a different story. Mechanical watches are regulated at the factory to run optimally on a right-handed person who will wear the watch on the outside of his or her wrist -i.e. crown down, dial up. The watch will not run as accurately in any other position, unless it is adjusted to do so. If you want to wear the watch on the inside of your wrist and have it run as well as if it were on the outside, you'll have to have it re-regulated.

17. How long will a quartz-watch replica batter last? A silver oxide battery will last two to three years. Lithium batteries will last 10 years or more. (They aren't interchangeable. Watches are designed to use either silver oxide or lithium batteries.)

18. Can you hurt a replica watch by pulling the crown out too hard when setting it or, in the case of a mechanical watch, winding it too much? It's unlikely you would hurt a watch doing either of these things. You would have to pull extremely hard on the stem to damage it while setting the watch. It is in theory possible to overwind a mainspring so that it breaks, but watch repairers say this rarely happens.

19. It is true you can preserve a quartz watch's battery power by pulling out the stem if you won't be wearing the replica watch for a few days? Pulling out the stem saves 75% to 80% of the watch's energy because the gears and hands aren't turning, says Fenwick of the Swatch Group. However, he points out, the savings is marginal when you consider that a silver oxide battery will lose 5% to 8% of its power a year just sitting unused.
